Counseling available for University students offended by Halloween costume

October 21st, 2016

The University of Florida is reminding students to take advantage of the school’s 24/7 counseling services just in case they find themselves offended by any insensitive Halloween costumes.

In a memo issued earlier this month, the school urged students to be cognizant of races and cultures when choosing a costume.

“Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions,” the memo reads. “Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.”

If a student does spot one of their peers in problematic apparel, he or she is encouraged to file a bias incident report at www.umatter.ufl.edu/stopbias so the Bias Education and Response Team can investigate and educate the responsible party.

The memo also mentioned the lasting negative impact social media posts can have on a student’s reputation.
