Tom Hardy is now a favorite to play the next Bond?

September 2nd, 2015

Despite the news that David Oyelowo will voice an upcoming James Bond audiobook, it’s another British actor climbing the charts among bookmakers who are placing bets on which actor will next play Bond on-screen. Variety reports that Tom Hardy, who made a big splash this summer as the titular, dust-coated hero of Mad Max: Fury Road, is quickly gaining on previous favorites to take over for Daniel Craig as 007 when he leaves the franchise.

Entertainment bookmaking is an odd and, of course, unreliable science. But still, it’s interesting to see where the public point of view is headed. Hardy is gaining on the current favorites, Idris Elba and Damian Lewis, who are tied in the race with betting odds at 3-1. Elba has long been the favorite (and the only name, as far as the general public knows, to be officially bandied about by Sony), but former Homeland star Lewis gained on Elba just earlier this summer.

And now Hardy is the rising star in this ever-shifting spy game. An Irish online bookmaker, BoyleSports, told Variety, “The next James Bond market has certainly come alive with all the support coming in for Tom Hardy, who is now 4-1 from 6-1 to take over from Daniel Craig . . . . With the support showing no signs of drying up, we are expecting Tom Hardy to be the new favorite for the role sooner rather than later, which could result in BoyleSports being hit hard if Hardy lands the role.” Though Hardy was a hit in Mad Max, it’s not exactly a logical leap from grunting post-apocalyptic road warrior to 007.

Man fatally shot while taking selfies with gun

September 2nd, 2015

A man posing with a gun and taking selfies was killed when the gun went off and struck him in southwest Houston, police said.

Family members said the victim is 19-year-old Deleon Alonso Smith.

Investigators said Smith was taking selfies with a gun at an apartment in the 9800 block of Forum Park Drive and Bissonnet around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when the gun accidentally went off, shooting the 19-year-old in the throat and killing him.

“It’s the worst feeling in my life,” said the victim’s uncle Eric Douglas.

“It’s a numb feeling. It’s still unbelievable. Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and now this kind of news,” said Smith’s grandmother Alma Douglas.

Family members said Smith has two young children and was starting college Wednesday.

Investigators said Smith’s cousin was in the apartment but in another room when it happened. The cousin told police they found the gun earlier Tuesday, but investigators are working to find out where.
